The Appeal of Powerlessness

"Let's suppose that you were able every night to dream any dream that you wanted to dream. And that you could, for example, have the power within one night to dream 75 years of time. Or any length of time you wanted to have. And you would, naturally as you began on this adventure of dreams, you would fulfill all your wishes. You would have every kind of pleasure you could conceive. And after several nights of 75 years of total pleasure each, you would say "Well, that was pretty great." But now let's have a surprise. Let's have a dream which isn't under control. Where something is gonna happen to me that I don't know what it's going to be. And you would dig that and come out of that and say "Wow, that was a close shave, wasn't it?" And then you would get more and more adventurous, and you would make further and further out gambles as to what you would dream. And finally, you would dream ... where you are now. You would dream the dream...

Artificial Dungeonmastering?

Image
For the past three months or so, in my downtime, I've been messing around a bit, writing a gazetteer using ChatGPT as a writing assistant: it's generator, proofreader, and editor--all in one! Surely this is the solution to my creator's block, yes? So I pulled out an old  obsidian.md  vault I'd started working on last year (honestly, I don't think there's a better note-taking software than Obsidian), and began feeding some ideas into it, starting with elements of the Deities, Elements, & Connotations series, to begin fleshing out some of these deities' profiles.  The latest effort of mine involves generating a depthcrawl . I'll show you what my input was with a snippet of the bot's answer, and the "usable" output I was able to collate (really, just a curation of the results I actually liked). Some prompts had to be regenerated multiple times in order to get a format or style that I wanted. Part 1: Locations I chose this prompt because I...

Deities, Elements, and Connotations Pt II: Triple Threat

This is a follow up to my previous post, which went over the general details surrounding the pantheon of my world. This piece will delve into more details surrounding each of THE THREE, and their relationships with their constituents. I will begin by citing the relevant information from the last post: THE SIX are subject, just as all else on the mortal plane, by the laws of nature; however, they are far from powerless.  They are  bound by their metaphysical relationships  to each other , and the world, but are  free to manipulate what falls within their lot . Each of THE THREE, containing two of THE SIX, exemplify these relationships; however,  THE THREE are a distinct entity from the two they are comprised of , just as each of THE THREE is distinct from THE ONE . The amount of power THE ONE, and thus THE THREE, holds is eternally stable; however, its distribution is constantly changing; this is  Heaven's Flux . The members of THE THREES hold an ...

Deities, Elements, and Connotations

This post is mostly going to be a compilation of some of my notes regarding the pantheon of my world. I will be doing a second post expounding on some of topics presented here. The One THE ONE gives rise to THE THREE; THE THREE give rise to THE SIX; THE SIX give rise to the world. THE ONE is both beyond existence and the meaning of existence itself. It is unification of the world unto THE SIX; THE SIX unto THE THREE; and THE THREE unto THE ONE. THE ONE is the source of all power; it is that from which all souls spring, and that unto which they shall return. THE ONE is unity; THE ONE is the highest form of individuality. Nothing happens beyond its will, but it holds no plans for the world. It is sovereignty; it is anarchy; it is democracy; it is totalitarianism. It pervades every facet of life, observing and oblivious to itself or its macrocosm of elements, as though in a waking-dream, executing all things in perfectly organized chaos. The Three THE THREE are elements of...

Solo Play: Episode One

I've begun a series of solo-play sessions, partially inspired by Daniel Norton's Let's Play, among other creators', but mostly due to being moved to a night shift at a hotel--which leaves me with lots of time to write and play. Here's my first session report: ---- Set out at first light from Endon, northwest upon the King's Highway. After two hours of walking, arrived at the edge of Lake Endon. Met some friendly fishermen who kindly ferried me across, free of charge. Shortly after, came upon the town of Goodmill. Attempted to recruit a travelling companion there, a gambler named Dunwick, but was met with hostility and left with haste. I should be wary there in the future. Perhaps four or five miles beyond the town, I came upon quite the conundrum--a choker, discarded in the middle of the road, set with aquamarine. Quite clearly, this was no masterwork, but it surely held some significance to someone. Looking around and seeing no obvious owner, the road being li...
